Clarinetist, composer, and new music collaborator Luke Ellard strives for art that is intentional, personal, and intersectional. The heart of his music is sharing stories, experiences, amplifying the voices of others, using music to bring communities together.
As clarinetist, Luke is at home in many settings, having performed with ensembles such as the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, North Texas Wind Symphony, University of Texas Wind Ensemble, Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra, and new music ensembles Sounds Modern and Nova Ensemble. Luke has participated in festivals such as Masterworks Festival, was a contemporary performance fellow at Atlantic Music Festival, and recently awarded fellow at Cortona Session for New Music in Cortona, Italy and Eighth Blackbird’s Blackbird Creative Lab.
As composer, Luke draws inspiration from broad experiences in hopes of communicating the every day to important topics of our time. His works have been internationally performed by ensembles such as the New Trombone Collective, the University of Texas Symphony Band, Michigan State University Concert Band, Barkada Quartet, Mother Falcon String Quartet, and the North Texas Wind Symphony.
Luke has earned degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (MM/PD Performance), the University of Texas at Austin (MM Composition), and Louisiana Tech University (BM Performance). Past clarinet instructors include James Campbell, Eric Hoeprich, Ana Victoria Luperi, and Lawrence Gibbs. As composer, he has studied with Dan Welcher, Donald Grantham, Yevgeniy Sharlat, and Joe L. Alexander.
