A New Light
*On Tour*
October 19th - 23rd, 2019
A New Light - the debut concert of the Spectrum Ensemble in May 2019 - celebrated the start of our journey advocating for increased Queer representation in classical music. This tour brings A New Light to universities and festivals around Texas and Oklahoma.
In this program we shed a new light on the queer identity of one of your favorite composers: Leonard Bernstein, and we perform works, which we specially commissioned and premiered for A New Light, by three wonderful LGBTQ composers who write some of the most exciting new music of our time.
We are also very excited to perform an exclusive preview of a new work by Alex Temple, which we will premiere at PASIC in November 2019.
By drawing attention to the lineage of Queer composers through the last century, we shed a new light on how significant LGBTQA+ individuals have been in the world of classical music.

Composers:
A sound can evoke a time, a place, a cultural moment, or a worldview. Alex Temple (b. 1983) writes music that distorts and combines iconic sounds to create new meanings, often in service of surreal, cryptic, or fantastical stories. She’s particularly interested in reclaiming socially disapproved-of (“cheesy”) sounds, playing with the boundary between funny and frightening, and investigating lost memories and secret histories.
